Accessing DHU
Derbyshire Health United (DHU) services are available when your GP surgery is closed. Typically this is from
6.30pm to 8.00am on weekdays, and all day on weekends and bank holidays.
When you are unwell and need healthcare advice or you think you need an appointment,
please call the GP surgery that you are registered with and your call will be
directed to us. Some surgeries will divert your call directly to us while others
will leave a message with our telephone number.
A call handler will take your call and take some information.
Some of the details that you will be asked for are:
- The phone number that you are calling from
- The patient's date of birth and home address
- The patient's registered GP surgery and the name of their GP
- The patient's symptoms
Depending on the problem you may be transferred to a nurse or doctor.
Where possible you will be dealt with in one call, but when the service is very busy you may be called back.
At the end of your call you will be told what is the most appropriate course of action.
This could be:
- Health Advice over the phone
- An appointment at a treatment centre
- A visit to your home by the service
- To visit your GP when they are next open
- Advice to attend your nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department
- Transfer to the ambulance service
If you are on holiday or staying with friends or relatives you can access our service.
Appointments and Home Visits
When calling into our service you may be given an appointment at one of our primary
care centres (PCC). If your condition does not allow you to travel to one of our
PCCs or if you are housebound you may be given a home visit instead.
DHU also run two out of hours walk-in centres where a pre-booked appointment is
not required to attend.
